Prism Prescribing
Prisms work by bending light to shift an image’s perceived location. A prism prescription is a powerful tool that can be used therapeutically or prescribed in glasses.

How a Prism Prescription From Neuro-optometrists Help:
- Therapeutically to improve convergence and divergence. Prism is used in vision therapy as a feedback tool to promote these binocular movements.
- In a compensatory manner to reduce double vision. We can incorporate prism into a glasses prescription to provide the brain a better opportunity to fuse (combine) the right and left eyes’ images.
- Yoked prism can be used to shift an entire visual field in a direction. Additionally, they can be used for the following patient populations:
- For patients after a stroke to improve the scanning ability of someone with a hemianopsia (loss of vision on the right or left side).
- For patients to decrease inattention of someone with visual neglect (ignoring sensory information from one’s left side).
- For patients on the autism spectrum who have difficulty staying visually engaged and with visual fixation.
- For patients who would benefit from an improvement with posture, gait and balance. We have helped some patients with Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, and toe-walkers using yoked prism.
During our evaluation we do specific testing and trialing of prism to determine if a patient would benefit from prism. Following this trial, we will determine the best prism prescription for a patient.
